261 – Topsy-Turvy

The Dudes perform without their corsets with 1999’s Topsy-Turvy.  This story of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Mikado collaboration, along with the inner-workings of the Savoy Theatre is one of Mike Leigh’s greatest achievements.  A successful opera isn’t easy to pull together, and neither is a film that dramatizes such a production.  It’s also Leigh’s funniest film, and once you realize how much work the cast put into this one, you’ll probably pass out.  But just have a cigarette, and you’ll be grand.
